Program Overview

Leap into the world of comic books on the Los Angeles Comics program in California. Immerse in campus life at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), studying on campus and starting off with the fundamentals of graphic design and drawing. Practice these skills in classes on layout and design, organizing a story panel by panel. Discover the techniques, methods and materials used by experts while exploring individual styles. Learn the craft of storytelling through narrative art, applying previous classes to illustrating a comic book. Between classes, students are encouraged to develop their comic book ideas in groups or independently. Connect with experts in the industry on a visit to a local comic book company and imagine what a career in comic books could look like.

All set in the inspiring city of Los Angeles, there are so many distinct landmarks where creative professionals have made their mark. By staying in the UCLA dormitories, students are immersed in campus life in the city known as the entertainment capital of the world. Explore where stars and artists have risen among the dazzling sights of Los Angeles, including the Hollywood Sign, Walk of Fame, Sunset Boulevard and Rodeo Drive. To truly get a sense for why this area is nicknamed La La Land, stroll along the endless beaches and boulevards of Venice and Santa Monica. Walk the city with a real working artist, listening to stories about the art and graffiti in the diverse art communities of Los Angeles.

Learning Outcomes

The five-day Los Angeles Comics program engages students in the fundamentals of storytelling through comic books. By staying in the UCLA residence halls, they are immersed in campus life in the city known as the entertainment capital of the world. Comprehensive comic book classes at the college cover graphic design, drawing, how to layout and design comic panels, methods, materials and narrative art. To gain insight into future career opportunities in the industry, there is a visit to a local comic book company. With a curated curriculum for educators to apply with the program, students are empowered to put their learning into practice before, during and after the trip.
