Come together with your fellow students to develop your very own startup business. After learning how to identify your customer and validate their problems it's onto the fun part, creating a solution! Creating a great product is just as important as finding customers to buy it. How will you sell your product to your customer? How will it solve the customer’s problem? What new value will you create for your customer? How do you compare to the competitors? Learn from real companies’ successes and failures while creating solutions for customers, just like you will with your startup team. This real-life simulation will teach you the realities of working in the business world and the challenges you would face everyday.
The startup ecosystem mirrors how big businesses work on a smaller scale. The skills and experiences you gain in this externship will allow you to explore what parts of the business world interest you the most, so you can make informed decisions with your career path. These include strategy, product marketing, growth marketing, sales and UI/UX design. You can build on these skills in any small business, startup or large corporation as you continue to develop your career. Providing pathways to these roles is key to the business world, as it allows for the next generation to get involved and create the next big business innovation to change our lives.
Introduction and Defining The Problem
Start with an introduction to Entrepreneurship (Developing, launching and running a business) and learning what core competencies are needed to be successful. Then through exercises, learn how to identify customers and define their problems.
Brainstorm your customers unmet needs or opportunities. Think about their problems and how you could solve them.
Start the day creating an entrepreneurship idea for the program and establish a unique value proposition. Get an introduction to marketing, branding and social media strategies. Learn how to conduct market research and the power of experimentation.
Interview and survey your potential customers to validate your ideas from yesterday’s session.
Designing and Developing Your Solution
Explore design principles and create a concept for your product. Learn how developers and designers would in tandem to test and debug prototypes and the role the product manager plays.
Sketch out your idea for your product, pick out design templates and learn how to quickly make your design a reality.
Understand different business models and their effects on sales, price and growth to find the model that works best for your startup.
Complete a business model canvas. Determine how you can easily communicate your value proposition.
Pitching Your Company
Learn what it takes to secure funding from investors and how to sell outsiders on your vision. Discover the different types of investors, the funding rounds and the role incubators and accelerators play in the startup ecosystem.
Time to show off your work! Prepare a presentation with your team and pitch your business to potential investors.
